SOME BODY

Lumière Contemporary Art Gallery is proud to present SOME BODY, a solo exhibition of expressive figurative paintings by Christina Drakos.

Painted in acrylic at the artist’s studio in Paris, this collection explores the timeless relationship between observation, anatomy, movement and artistic expression. Inspired exclusively by live models, the works celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the human form while inviting us to look beyond appearances and discover the humanity that lies within every body.

For centuries, drawing and painting from the live model has been one of the foundations of artistic education. For Christina this was much more than an academic exercise—it was a lesson in seeing.

Working from a live model is an intense dialogue between observation and intuition. Nothing remains static. The artist has only a brief moment to capture the tension of a gesture, the weight of a shoulder, the elegance of a hand, the curve of a back or the quiet poetry of a pose. Each painting becomes the trace of an encounter that can never be repeated.

In SOME BODY, the human figure is not treated as portraiture nor as an idealized representation of beauty. Instead, it becomes a landscape of line, colour, rhythm and emotion. Anatomy is not the destination; it is the language through which expression emerges.

Just as important as the figure itself are the spaces that surround it. Empty space is never truly empty. It breathes. It creates silence, balance and tension. It allows the body to exist within the composition and invites the viewer’s imagination to complete the story. Presence and absence, form and emptiness become equal partners in a visual dialogue.

Executed in expressive acrylics, these paintings embrace spontaneity and gesture. Bold brushstrokes, vibrant colors and simplified forms reveal not only what the artist observed, but also what she felt. They are interpretations rather than reproductions, allowing emotion and energy to become as important as anatomical accuracy.

The title SOME BODY carries several meanings. It speaks of a body, of some body, and of somebody. Every figure remains anonymous, yet every figure is profoundly individual. Each posture suggests a personality. Each gesture hints at an untold story. Every body carries memory, vulnerability, resilience, beauty and identity.

This exhibition is an invitation to slow down and truly look. To appreciate the extraordinary complexity hidden within the simplest gesture. To discover that the human body is never merely a physical form, but a living expression of experience, emotion and presence.

Because behind every body is somebody.

A story.

A presence.

A life.
